How do we decide what outcomes should be measured in health research – and whose perspectives shape those decisions?
Core Outcome Sets (COS) aim to identify the outcomes that should be consistently measured and reported in research on a particular health condition or area. Ensuring that these outcomes reflect what matters to people with lived experience is therefore important, but there has been limited guidance on how best to achieve this.
This webinar will introduce GUIDE-COS, new guidance for incorporating lived-experience perspectives when developing the initial list of potential outcomes for a COS. Marci will describe how the guidance was developed through a scoping review, interviews with people with lived experience and COS developers, and an international survey. She will present the final guidance statements and discuss their practical application for researchers, alongside priorities for future COS methods research.
Speaker:
Marci Kay Livingston, DNP, MPH, BSN, RN, is an HRB-TMRN PhD Scholar at the University of Limerick, Ireland. Her doctoral research focuses on the inclusion of people with lived experience in the development of Core Outcome Sets (COS), exploring how the perspectives of those most affected by a health condition can meaningfully inform decisions about what outcomes are measured in research. Marci’s research brings together evidence synthesis, qualitative research and international collaboration and has informed the development of GUIDE-COS, new guidance to support the meaningful inclusion of lived-experience perspectives when identifying potential outcomes for a COS. Drawing on her background in clinical practice and leadership, Marci has a broader interest in inclusive research methods and ensuring that those most affected by research are meaningfully represented in the decisions that shape it.
