Journalogy for Trialists (Online)
This course is offered by the Centre for Journalology, based at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, which is an affiliate of the University of Ottawa and was developed specifically for HRB-TMRN members. The cost of registration is €250. Journalology (broadly) can be defined as the science of publication practices and the study of these activities.
This Journalology for Clinical Trialists course has been structured into 11 distinct modules, which should be completed in order as they build successively on one another. Video lectures will be used in each module to describe content. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in exercises based on the content learned and will be asked to complete both formative and evaluated quizzes. Participants will need to spend at least one hour on each module to complete it effectively.

Overall aim of this course
This course will help participants to become more informed about Journalology and changes occurring in this field. By the end of this course, participants will have practical skills and understanding of the relevance of Journalology course content in everyday research activities.
Ultimately, this course should help participants ensure that the research they produce adds value to the biomedical literature and limits waste.
This course consists of 11 modules
This module introduces you to the field of journalology. At the end of this module you should be able to define journalology and identify major themes and subject areas that fall under the umbrella of journalology; identify key stakeholders and events in the history of journalology; and explain why it’s important to study journalology.
After this module, you should be able to understand different types of selective reporting and different levels of selective reporting, understand the consequences of selective reporting – namely reporting & publication biases – and lastly, you should be able to detect selective reporting and publication bias.
Discussing mitigating selective reporting and publication bias. The learning objectives for this module are: Identify tools, resources, and behaviours aimed at the prevention, identification, or management of publication bias, learn how to register a trial, and learn how to prepare a trial protocol.
This module will focus on providing you with a basic introduction to publication ethics. By the end of this module participants should be able to identify and explain ethical issues related to publishing. Participants will also be able to explain authorship qualifications and responsibilities and be able to explain best practices in research transparency.
The learning objectives for this module are threefold. By the end of this module participants should be able to: identify and describe different publication models and understand their relationship with copyright rules; to identify strengths and weaknesses of each publication model, and; to understand what predatory journals are and how to avoid these.
The learning objectives of this module are as follows: To define what scholarly publication metrics are; to name commonly used publication metrics; to be able to identify strengths, weaknesses, and the appropriateness of different publication metrics, and to be able to select an appropriate metric to assess your own work and the work of others.
The learning objectives for this module are: Explain what reporting guidelines are and how they are used, identify appropriate resources for finding reporting guidelines, select an appropriate reporting guideline for reporting different types of research, and understand reporting guidance and policies of journals and funders.
The learning objectives for this module are: Utilize the CONSORT 2010 checklist, flow diagram, and supporting documents to report your trial; Understand the integration of CONSORT extensions and other guidelines with CONSORT; Learn how to prepare a trial manuscript; Understand how to documents changes in pre-specified methods and outcomes; Learn how to report trial results in a trial registry.
The learning objectives for this module are: Overview of systematic review reporting (from protocol to publication); Learn how to register a systematic review; Learn how to prepare a systematic review protocol; Learn how to prepare a systematic review report.
This module addresses how to select a journal and submit your manuscript. By the end of this module, students should be able to understand a typical journal publication process, be able to select an appropriate publication model for their own work, and locate and comply with editorial policies like instructions for authors.
The learning objectives for this module are to understand the different types of manuscript peer review, to know how to integrate an appropriate reporting guideline into the manuscript peer review process; and to be able to prepare an appropriate response to a peer review comment.
