This workshop provides an in-depth introduction to adaptive interventions and Sequential, Multiple Assignment, Randomized Trials (SMARTs), which are designed to inform personalized, evidence-based interventions across multiple stages of care or implementation. We begin by defining adaptive interventions, highlighting their core components, practical relevance, and applications across various domains. We then introduce the SMART design, using real-world examples to illustrate its structure, key features, and how it differs from related designs. The workshop explores typical primary, secondary, and exploratory aims of SMARTs, with special attention to their role in grant writing and protocol development. We conclude with an overview of SMART analysis, including sample size and power considerations. Concepts will be reinforced through published trials and code provided.
