Definitions, Perceptions and Challenges

Niamh is a PhD student with the HRB-TMRN based at the HRB Clinical Research Facility Cork and University College Cork. Niamh holds an MSc in Healthcare Ethics and Law. From 2010 to 2017 Niamh was based at the INFANT Centre, University College Cork, where she was the Clinical Trial Coordinator for a double blind, international, multicentre EU FP7 funded project in conjunction with being the Project Manager of various randomised Neonatal Clinical Trials, Medical Device Trials and Observational Studies. Niamh was previously employed as the Project Manager for an independent, single-centre CRO which performed Phase I bioequivalence and bioavailability clinical trials, dental and cosmetic studies. Niamh has had extensive involvement in clinical trial management, with over 12 years’ experience in the research industry.

Niamh’s doctoral research is focused on the conduct of Registry Based Randomised Controlled Trials. Her research comprises four distinct pieces of work; to define the features of registry based randomised controlled trials; to establish the barriers and facilitators of recruitment to registry based randomised controlled trials; to conduct a process evaluation of the challenges to establishing a clinical trial research registry in Ireland; to conduct a proof of concept rRCT utilising an established healthcare registry. Presently Niamh is finalising her systematic review titled ‘Defining the Features of Registry Based Randomised Controlled Trials’.

She is supervised by Dr Frances Shiely (Senior Lecturer and Director of Education, HRB Clinical Research Facility, University College Cork) and Prof. Joe Eustace (Director of the HRB Clinical Research Facility, University College Cork).
